Closed circuit television (CCTV) is now so generally accepted as to have become commonplace. There is little doubt that this widely available technology is having a major impact on the prevention and detection of crime, many people now regard it as a first line of defence.

It still involves complex technology, and there are many options involving cost, quality, camera capability, power supply, system function, long term reliability and ease of information retrieval. All these need to be addressed before an effective and economically viable solution can be proposed.
